Repeater contact script

How to handle 2m and 70cm contacts

Below is a very basic local repeater contact script. There is no right or wrong way to do this, you will soon develop your own style. Just be polite and friendly, and you'll be just fine. Always give your call sign every fifteen minutes and enjoy the conversation.

Tip: Print this script, or open it on your PC so it's in front of you when you make those first contacts.

2m and 70cm repeater contact script

Your initial call:

  1. Tune in to the repeater frequency and listen for about 2 to 3 minutes. 
  2. If the repeater is clear then continue to transmit, if it's busy then listen, but don't transmit just yet.
  3. Hello, this is [your call sign]  looking for any calls on the [repeater name] repeater, [your call sign phonetic] looking for any calls.
  4. Wait for a minute and repeat.

When you get a reply:

  1. Note their call sign.
  2. Hello [their call sign] this is  [your call sign]. Good morning/afternoon/evening thanks for answering my call.
  3. Your report is [5 9]. My name is  [your name].
  4. My location is [you home area]. My name is [your name] So how do you copy? [their call sign]  this is [your call sign] handing back to you. 
  5. The other station will give their information and your report. At the end of the over, they will transmit [their call sign].
  6. Continue to talk as you like. Begin each transmit with [their call sign] this is [your call sign].... Hello [their name]....engage in conversation
  7. Normally concludes with ”OK [their call name] thank you for the chat, 73's to you…... [their call sign] this is [your call sign] signing off.
